Etymology
Ξεχνάω comes from the prefix ξε-, a reduced form of the ancient prefix εκ-/εξ- meaning 'out of' or 'away from', joined to a stem related to ancient γιγνώσκω, 'to know'. The compound originally meant something close to 'to un-know', and over time it settled into the everyday sense of forgetting. The verb takes the common -άω conjugation pattern of Modern Greek.
