Etymology
Greek άσος was borrowed from French as, itself from Latin as, a small Roman coin and unit that also marked the single pip on dice. The word arrived in Greek along with Western card games and kept the sense of the top-ranking card. From there, Greek speakers extended it informally to mean a person who excels at something, much like the English phrase an ace pilot.
