Etymology
Βάθος comes from Ancient Greek, built on the same stem as the adjective βαθύς, meaning deep. The origin of that root is not settled. Some linguists treat it as inherited from Indo-European, but others argue it comes from a pre-Greek substrate language, so no secure Indo-European root can be given. The noun itself is an old formation, already used by classical authors for both literal depth and figurative depth of thought or feeling.
