Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek βούτυρον, a compound of βοῦς (cow, ox) and τυρός (cheese), so it literally meant cow-cheese. Greek speakers already used this term in antiquity, since butter was more common among neighboring peoples like the Scythians and Thracians than in early Greek cuisine. The word passed into Latin as butyrum and from there spread into many European languages.
