Δικαιοδοσία is a compound built from δίκαιο(ς), meaning just or lawful, and a form of δόσις, meaning a giving or granting, itself from δίδωμι, to give. Together the parts describe the granting of legal authority to judge or rule, which is exactly what jurisdiction means. The word entered common use in Modern Greek legal and administrative language and today functions as the standard term for a court's or authority's scope of power.
