Word family
Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek ἱστός (histós), a verbal adjective built on the stem of ἵστημι, meaning to stand or set upright. A mast is the pole set upright on a ship, and a loom's warp threads were set upright to weave on, so the word came to mean both mast and web or fabric. Modern Greek kept the noun and later extended it to biological tissue and, in the twentieth century, to the internet's Web.
