Etymology
θετικός comes from θετός, the verbal adjective of τίθημι, "to put, to place." The suffix -ικός turns this into an adjective meaning roughly "pertaining to placing or positing." Over time the sense narrowed to "positive," much as Latin ponere ("to place") gave English "positive" the same way. τίθημι itself goes back to a common Indo-European root for "to put, to do."
