Etymology
κοστίζω is built from the noun κόστος (cost, price) plus the verb-forming suffix -ίζω. κόστος entered Greek through Italian costo, which goes back to Latin constare, meaning to stand firm together, and by extension to cost a fixed amount. The image is of a price that stands settled. This makes κοστίζω a distant relative of English words such as cost and constant, which trace to the same Latin root.
