Etymology
κάταγμα comes from the ancient verb κατάγνυμι, to break or shatter, itself built from the prefix κατά- (down, thoroughly) and ἄγνυμι (to break). The suffix -μα turns a verb into a noun naming the result of the action, so κάταγμα literally names the thing produced by breaking. Ancient medical writers used it for a broken bone, and Modern Greek kept that exact clinical sense.
