Επίτροπος comes from the verb επιτρέπω, meaning to permit or entrust. It combines the prefix επί, meaning upon or over, with the root of τρέπω, meaning to turn. The original sense is someone to whom a task or authority is turned over. Greek kept this sense through the Byzantine period and into modern administrative and church usage.
