Etymology

The word comes from ancient Greek epidēmía, built from epi- (upon, among) and dēmos (the people), with the abstract noun suffix -ia. It originally described a condition that was 'upon the people', that is, widespread among a population. Ancient Greek medical writers, including the Hippocratic corpus, used it for diseases that struck many people in a place at once. The root dēmos itself has no secure Indo-European origin and may come from a pre-Greek substrate language.
