Etymology
Κοινότητα is built from the adjective κοινός, meaning common or shared, plus the suffix -ότητα, which turns an adjective into an abstract noun, much like -ity does in English. So the word literally means the state of being common or shared. Κοινός itself is old and its origin is debated, but scholars often link it to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning with or together.
