Etymology

Λιμάνι descends from ancient Greek λιμήν (limḗn), meaning harbor or bay, by way of a later diminutive form used in medieval Greek. The word then took the common neuter ending -άνι that many everyday Greek nouns carry today. Scholars do not agree on a firm Indo-European root for λιμήν, and some treat it as a word Greek borrowed from an older, pre-Greek language of the region.
