Etymology
Τζίνι is a direct borrowing of English "genie." English took the word from French "génie," which the translator Antoine Galland used in the early 1700s to render the Arabic "jinnī" (a spirit) in his French version of the Thousand and One Nights. Galland chose "génie" because it echoed the Latin "genius," a guardian spirit, even though the Arabic word has a separate origin. Greek later adopted the English form as τζίνι, giving it a neuter noun ending.
