Etymology

Μαγικός comes from μάγος, the ancient Greek word for a Persian priest or sorcerer. Greek borrowed μάγος from Old Persian magu-, the name for a member of the Zoroastrian priestly caste, whom Greeks associated with occult ritual and wisdom. The adjective suffix -ικός, meaning "pertaining to," was then added to form μαγικός, "pertaining to a magos, magical." The word passed through Latin magicus into most European languages.
