Etymology

Μετρό is a direct loan from French métro, itself a shortening of métropolitain. That French word came from Greek μητρόπολις (mētropolis, mother-city), built from μήτηρ (mother) and πόλις (city). So the word left Greek in ancient form, picked up a new sense in Paris, and came back to Modern Greek as an unrelated-looking loanword.
