Etymology

The verb comes from the noun μπλόκο, a roadblock or barrier, borrowed from Italian blocco. Greek added the common verb-forming suffix -άρω, the same pattern used for many loanwords such as παρκάρω (to park) and σερβίρω (to serve). This -άρω pattern lets Greek absorb foreign verbs quickly by attaching a native ending to a foreign stem.
