Etymology
Μπουνιά combines the old Greek word μπούνι, meaning fist, which came into Greek from Venetian pugno, with the suffix -ιά, a common ending that turns a word for an object into a word for a blow struck with it. The same pattern gives μαχαιριά, a knife stab, from μαχαίρι, knife. Venetian pugno traces back to Latin pugnus, fist, so μπουνιά is a distant relative of that Latin word.
