The word comes from Ancient Greek δάφνη, the name for the laurel or bay tree. Its ultimate origin is unclear and it is often considered a pre-Greek, Mediterranean substrate word rather than one from Indo-European roots. Ancient sources already linked the tree to the myth of the nymph Daphne, who was turned into a laurel to escape Apollo.
