Etymology
Πιστός is a verbal adjective built on the same root as πείθω (to persuade) and πίστις (trust, faith). The root traces to the PIE root *bʰeidʰ-, meaning to trust or confide. Over time the word narrowed from an active sense of persuading to a passive one of being trustworthy or believed in.
