Etymology
The word joins δῆμος, meaning people or public, with ἔργον, meaning work, plus the agent suffix -ός. In classical Greek it first named a craftsman who worked for the public, such as a doctor or builder. Plato later used it as a technical term for the divine craftsman who shapes the physical universe in the dialogue Timaeus. Modern Greek keeps both senses: an ordinary word for creator or maker, and a philosophical term for a cosmic architect.
