Etymology

Ξέφυγε is the third-person singular aorist of ξεφεύγω, built from the prefix ξε- (out, away, a reduced form of the older εκ-/εξ-) and φεύγω, the ordinary Greek verb for fleeing. Φεύγω goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root for fleeing, the same root behind Latin fugere. That Latin verb later gave English words like fugitive and refuge.
