Word family
Etymology
The verb comes from ancient Greek τυγχάνω, meaning to happen upon or to hit a mark by chance, combined with the prefix επι- (upon, at). Over time the sense narrowed from hitting a target by chance to achieving a goal through effort. Modern Greek fused the prefix and root into the single verb πετυχαίνω, with πέτυχα as its aorist stem.
