Etymology
The word comes from the verb ενοχλώ, to bother or disturb, built from the prefix εν- and the root οχλ-, related to όχλος, meaning crowd or mob, and by extension trouble or commotion. The adjective-forming suffix -τικός marks a quality or tendency, so ενοχλητικός means characterized by causing disturbance. The origin of όχλος itself is uncertain and may predate Indo-European Greek.
