Etymology

Ελικόπτερο is a Greek compound of έλικας (spiral, screw, propeller) and πτερό (wing). The pattern was first assembled in French as hélicoptère in the 1860s by Gustave de Ponton d'Amécourt, who built the word from these same two Greek elements to describe his rotor-driven flying model. Modern Greek later adopted the French coinage back into its own vocabulary, reusing its own ancient roots.
