The word joins άνθρωπος (human being) with the combining form -κτονία, drawn from the verb κτείνω, to kill. Ancient Greek already used this pattern to build words for specific kinds of killing, such as πατροκτονία (killing one's father). Modern Greek kept ανθρωποκτονία as the formal, legal term for homicide, distinct from the more everyday φόνος (murder).
