Etymology
Οπαδός comes from the Ancient Greek ὀπαδός, meaning a companion or attendant who accompanies and follows someone. It is tied to the verb έπομαι, "to follow," which traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root *sekʷ-, "to follow." That same root produced Latin sequi and its many descendants. Over centuries the word narrowed from "attendant" to today's sense of a fan or supporter.
