Modern Greek πάω continues the ancient verb ὑπάγω (hypágō), literally 'to lead under' or 'to withdraw', built from the prefix ὑπό ('under') and ἄγω ('to lead, drive'). Over time the unstressed initial syllable dropped and the medial consonant weakened, leaving the short form πάω. The same source verb also gave Modern Greek πηγαίνω, the other everyday word for 'to go'.
