Etymology
The word joins the prefix περί (around) to a form of the verb πλέκω (to weave, to plait). Together they describe something woven around itself, so tangled that it resists easy separation. Modern Greek kept this image intact, using περίπλοκος for anything, from puzzles to legal systems, that is hard to follow or unravel.
