Etymology
Χώμα comes from ancient Greek χῶμα, meaning a mound or heap of earth thrown up by digging. That noun is built on the verb χώννυμι, to heap up or pile, which itself traces to the same root as χέω, to pour. The sense shifted over time from the heap itself to the loose earth it is made of.
