Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek πλανήτης, short for ἀστὴρ πλανήτης, a wandering star. Ancient astronomers used it to describe the handful of bright points that moved against the fixed backdrop of the night sky, unlike ordinary stars. The root is πλαν-, from the verb πλανάομαι, to wander or stray. Latin borrowed the term as planeta, which gave English planet.
