Formed from the Greek noun ποινή ("penalty, punishment, sentence") plus the productive relational suffix -ικός, which builds adjectives meaning "pertaining to." Ancient Greek ποινή meant "blood-price, fine, retribution" and was famously borrowed into Latin as poena, the source of English "pain," "penal," and "penalty." The root traces to a Proto-Indo-European notion of payment and atonement.
