Etymology
From Ancient Greek φαινόμενον, the neuter present middle participle of φαίνομαι 'to appear, be seen' (middle of φαίνω 'to bring to light, show'). It literally meant 'that which appears' and was adopted as a philosophical and scientific term for an observable occurrence. English 'phenomenon' is a learned borrowing of this same Greek word.
