Etymology
Formed from the noun Έλλην (Héllēn, 'a Hellene, a Greek') plus the productive adjectival suffix -ικός, which derives adjectives meaning 'pertaining to, characteristic of'. The base Έλλην is of disputed, pre-Greek origin and has no securely reconstructed Indo-European etymology. The whole word thus means literally 'of/pertaining to the Hellenes'.
