Etymology
Modern Greek φύλλο continues Ancient Greek φύλλον (phýllon) 'leaf', which goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to bloom, sprout'. The same root gave Latin folium 'leaf', the source of English words like 'foliage' and 'foil'. The English culinary term 'phyllo/filo' is borrowed directly from this Greek word.
