Etymology

Inherited unchanged from Ancient Greek θρόνος, an elevated, ornate seat. It is generally traced to the Proto-Indo-European root *dʰer- 'to hold, support', so a throne is etymologically 'that which holds (one) up'. The word passed into Latin as thronus and from there into most European languages.
