Etymology

From Ancient Greek ὁμολογία 'agreement, assent, confession', a derivative of ὁμολογέω 'to agree, to say the same thing', built from ὁμός 'same, common' and λόγος 'word, speech, account'. The literal idea of 'saying the same thing' shifted from 'agreement' to 'admission, avowal'. The learned form passed into Latin as homologia and into modern European scientific vocabulary (e.g. 'homology').
