καθίζω comes from Ancient Greek καθίζω, a compound of the prefix κατά ('down') and ἵζω ('to set, make sit'). ἵζω is itself a reduplicated causative built on the Proto-Indo-European root *sed- ('to sit'). The same root spread across Indo-European, surfacing in Latin sedeō and English 'sit' and 'seat'.
