Etymology
Modern Greek λάδι comes from Byzantine/Medieval Greek λάδιον, a diminutive of Ancient Greek ἔλαιον ('olive oil'). Over time the diminutive displaced the older form and became the ordinary everyday word for oil. ἔλαιον is tied to ἐλαία ('olive tree') and is widely regarded as a loan from a pre-Greek Mediterranean source, the same origin underlying Latin oleum and oliva.
