Etymology

From Ancient Greek πλατεῖα, the feminine of the adjective πλατύς 'broad, wide', originally an ellipsis of πλατεῖα ὁδός 'broad street'. The Greek word was borrowed into Latin as platea 'broad street, courtyard', which in turn gave Italian piazza, Spanish plaza and, via Old French, English 'place'. The underlying notion is that of a wide, open, flat space.
