Etymology
Πολεμικός is built from the noun πόλεμος, meaning war, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning pertaining to. The word already existed in Ancient Greek with the same core sense of relating to war or fighting. The origin of πόλεμος itself is disputed: some scholars treat it as inherited, others as a word of pre-Greek substrate origin, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
