Etymology
From Ancient Greek σύντροφος ('brought up together, foster-brother'), a compound of the prefix σύν ('together, with') and the verbal root of τρέφω ('to nourish, rear'). The original sense was someone reared in the same household, which broadened to 'companion' and 'comrade'. In Modern Greek it additionally denotes a life partner and serves as the standard leftist term of address, 'comrade'.
