Etymology
The word builds on τραγούδι, the modern Greek word for song, which descends from ancient τραγῳδία, tragedy. In Byzantine and later Greek, τραγῳδία narrowed in everyday speech to mean simply a sung piece, and the verb τραγουδώ, to sing, was formed from it. τραγουδίστρια adds the feminine agentive suffix -ίστρια to this verb stem, giving a word that means, roughly, the woman who does the singing.
