Etymology

Ακολουθία comes from ακόλουθος, meaning follower or attendant, plus the abstract noun ending -ία. Ακόλουθος itself joins the copulative prefix α- (together, same) with κέλευθος, an old word for path or road, so it originally meant someone who shares the same path as another. The noun ακολουθία later shifted to mean the act of following in order, which gave rise to its modern senses of sequence and, in church usage, a fixed order of service.
