Αμοιβαίος comes from the noun αμοιβή, meaning exchange, alternation, or reward, itself from the verb αμείβω, to exchange or requite. The suffix -αίος turns the noun into an adjective describing something characterized by exchange, hence mutual or reciprocal. Some etymologists connect αμείβω to the same root that produced Latin migrare, to move or change place, the ancestor of English migrate.
