Χιλιόμετρο is a compound built from χίλιοι, meaning thousand, and μέτρο, meaning measure or meter. The word mirrors the French kilomètre, coined during the adoption of the metric system, and Greek simply used its own native root for thousand rather than the Greek-derived prefix kilo- that other languages borrowed back. Μέτρο itself goes back to Ancient Greek μέτρον, a measure or standard.
