Etymology

Κεντρικός is built from the noun κέντρον, "center, fixed point," plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, "pertaining to." Κέντρον originally meant a sharp point or goad, and its sense narrowed to the fixed point of a compass, then to "center" in general. The word entered Latin as centrum and from there passed into English as center and central.
