Etymology

Îndată is built from the preposition în (in, on) and dată, the feminine form of dat, the past participle of a da (to give). Dată also stands on its own as a noun meaning a point in time or an occasion, as in the phrase o dată (once, one time). Îndată originally meant something like at that very moment, and over time it hardened into a single adverb meaning immediately.
