Etymology
Dată comes from Latin data, the feminine past participle of dare, to give. Roman scribes closed letters and documents with a phrase like data Romae, given at Rome, followed by the day. Over time that word for the act of giving turned into the noun for the day itself, and Romanian kept the same shift, alongside a related sense of dată as a moment or occasion.
