Încă most likely comes from the Latin adverb unquam, meaning 'ever' or 'at any time'. Over the centuries its meaning narrowed and shifted from a marker of indefinite time to today's sense of ongoing action or extra quantity. This kind of drift is common for short, high-frequency function words, since heavy daily use wears down and reshapes their original meaning. Other Romance languages did not keep this word in the same form, so its closest relatives are found only within Romanian.
